I tend to prefer the term “best practice” over the word standard… when people see the word standard they immediately associate a mentality of rigidness and lack of innovation.

In order to scale, a lightweight framework/understanding of how things should be done is absolutely necessary.

Think about a road… in general roads are flat, have a minimum width, and have traffic flows… As an organization, we should be able to identify which side of the road we all drive on…

Potential areas to implement standards (best practices) include:

  • Security
  • Coding
  • Source Control Flow
  • Code Deployment / Automation
  • Platform Architecture
  • Web Architecture
  • REST API
  • Environment
